Rock Music Photographer

Live Music Photography by UK Music Photographer Steve Johnston

Steve Johnston is a UK based concert photographer and live music photojournalist. As a non-professional photographer, for over 25 years, Steve has been photographing live music. From fellow local bands in Worcester during 90's, to some of the biggest names in rock at the largest venues in the UK to date.

From an early age Steve was influenced by rock and metal music and bands like Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Motorhead, Metallica and Anthrax. He loved the concert photography on album sleeves and posters and in magazines like Kerrang! and Metal Hammer. During the 80's when he first started going to gigs and festivals, he would sneak a camera in to grab his own photos.

In the early 90's, he became official photographer for a local music venue and started to photograph established rock bands from the photo pit, before going on to study photography and gaining a HND and BA (Hons). During his time at University his photographs were being published in regional press and magazines and he received regular commissions

In 2009, after a nine years out of music photography, Steve returned to the pit and in a keen effort to re-establish himself, was shortlisted in the 2010 NME Photography Awards before going on to win the 2011 Gibson Sonisphere Photography Competition.
